The Pressure for Success
Include well-being in your definition of success
Being a teen in Mercer Island, you may find yourself juggling a lot of responsibilities. How often is “taking care of my well-being” included in your definition of successfully completing all your responsibilities?
Creating healthy space in your life involves prioritizing your mental, emotional, and physical health. This can include getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and taking time to relax and recharge. It’s about finding a balance that works for you, so that you can feel your best and tackle life’s pressures head on.
By investing in your well-being, you can feel more productive, focused, and energized, which can generate even greater success in all areas of your life, including relationships, academics, and even your personal happiness.
Keep in mind that your idea of success may look completely different from another’s…and that’s okay.

Health Tips for Redefining “Success”
- Define success on your own terms: It’s important to define success in a way that aligns with your values and priorities. This can help reduce pressure and create a more positive mindset. Consider what truly matters to you and how you can achieve a sense of fulfillment and happiness in your life.
- Set boundaries: Setting boundaries is important for maintaining a healthy mindspace. It can be easy to get caught up in school or other commitments, but it’s important to take time for yourself and your well-being. Set boundaries around your time, energy, and resources to ensure that you have the space to prioritize your well-being.
- Cultivate positive relationships: Building positive relationships with friends, family, and other trusted adults can help to create a supportive environment and boost your overall well-being. Make time to connect with others, whether it’s through social events, shared hobbies, or simply reaching out to check in.
- Disconnect from technology: Technology can be a source of stress and distraction. Consider taking a break from your phone, social media, or email for a set period of time each day. This can help you disconnect from life and other stressors and focus on the present moment.
- Prioritize self-care: Self-care is any activity that helps you care for your physical, mental, or emotional health. This could include making time for friends, going for a walk, reading a book, or listening to music. Prioritizing self-care can help you recharge and reduce stress.
- Embrace a growth mindset: A growth mindset is the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work, dedication, and learning. Embracing a growth mindset can help you to overcome obstacles, learn from failures, and achieve your goals.
- Seek support when needed: It’s important to recognize when you need support and reach out for help when necessary. This could be from a trusted adult, family member, friend, or a mental health professional. Seeking support can help you to navigate challenges, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.
