How can I reduce my stress?
Build skills to manage stress and improve your mental health
Let’s face it. Growing up on the Island, there is lots of pressure to succeed–at everything. Sometimes it can be just too much. In fact, many students at Mercer Island High School report high levels of stress and mental health struggles.
According to the Mercer Island Healthy Youth Survey:
- 21% of students reported “feeling sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks in a row.”
- 16% of students reported “seriously considering attempting suicide.”
Island Space offers a path to improve your mental health and achieve personal success. In fact, learning how to manage stress in a healthy way can create greater success in your personal and school life. In short, less stress equals more success.
Health Tips for Managing Stress
- Identify the stress: Recognize the sources of stress in your life and make a list. This will help you understand what triggers your stress and develop healthy strategies to cope with them.
- Talk to someone: Share your feelings with someone you trust, such as a friend, family member, counselor or other trusted adult. Opening up about your feelings can help reduce stress and provide valuable perspective.
- Practice self-care: Prioritize sleep, healthy eating, and regular exercise. These habits can help reduce stress and improve your overall mental and physical health.
- Establish a routine: Having a consistent daily routine can provide a sense of stability and control, which can help reduce stress.
- Set realistic goals: Break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. This can help reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and make progress more achievable.
- Practice mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, to help calm your mind and reduce stress.
- Take breaks: Give yourself regular breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This can help reduce stress and give your mind a chance to recharge.
- Develop healthy coping strategies: Find activities that help you relax and recharge, such as reading, listening to music, or spending time in nature.
- Avoid using unhealthy coping mechanisms: Try to limit activities like excessive screen time and overeating. Avoid alcohol and drug use.
- Seek professional help: If your stress becomes unmanageable or you’re experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, reach out to a trusted adult or mental health professional for support and guidance.
